December 5, 2011

We are very busily making our way toward the end of the calendar year in all freshman English classes.  This week, we are beginning new units in all classes.

Period C:

In honors, students are also wrapping up their Odyssey Unit with a second paper - this is a personal narrative about a journey they have taken in their lives.  The rough draft of this paper is due this Friday.  The final draft is due on Friday, December 16th.

Today, we also began a new poetry unit in which students will read, write, analyze, and evaluate a wide range of poetry.  We kicked this unit off by looking at modern day music lyrics as a form of poetry and will continue to look at a variety of poetry from a range of authors.

Period D:

In CP2, we are wrapping up the Scarlet Ibis packet and paragraph assignment.  From here, we are moving on to a two week writing workshop in which students will complete three short multi-draft process pieces. Students will be given time in the classroom and in the computer lab to work on pre-writing, drafting, revising, conferencing, and finalizing these pieces.  Students will be writing three pieces, but will be given three options for topics/assignments for each piece.  It should be a fun, but challenging experience in which I hope all students can really enhance their writing skills.

Period E & G:

In CP1, we are moving along in our media writing unit.  Students are working on their first short newspaper story, and later this week, they will begin working on an interview process which will be used to help write their second newspaper story.  It is very important that students not only work on their writing, but also the interviewing process.  Students will view sample interviews, practice interviewing techniques, and work on formulating quality interview questions.  These skills are not only important for English class and this assignment, but also for real world experiences they are bound to have in the near future.

Homework:

All classes have vocabulary packets due and quizzes on Friday.

Period E&G: News story pre-writing due Tuesday.

Period E&G: Many students did not turn in their expository papers today.  Those must be in ASAP.  10% off for each day it is late!
