Week 2!

I hope everyone enjoyed their four day weekend!  This week will be very busy, as we wrap up the summer reading assignments and get started with our first piece of literature for the year.

All students will also be responsible for presenting their summer reading artifacts during their C Period class this week.  The day of the presentations will be determined by the Period C teacher.  English 1 Honors students will be presenting both of their artifacts (honors students were asked to read two books over the summer) during Period C on Wednesday.  Honors students will also be required to write an essay on their summer reading books, which I will give out more information about this week.

Also, coming up on Thursday this week, all Blue Team students will be going to the computer lab to take a Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) test during English class.  This test determines students reading comprehension levels, which will help us to set goals and monitor progress throughout the year.  Students will be tested again at the end of the year to track their progress.

As I mentioned above, we will begin our first pieces of literature this week.

Students in Period C and Period D will be reading John Knowles' A Separate Peace.  Throughout this unit, students will also focus on various types of writing, including analytical and creative, as well as the importance of the newspaper during the 1940s when the story takes place.

Students in Period E and Period G will be reading John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, with a heavy focus on the author's writing style and creative writing techniques.  At the conclusion of the unit, students will be asked to write a creative short story of their own.

I hope everyone is ready for a busy week!  Don't forget - school pictures are also this Friday, during English.

Please check back everyday for homework/assignment updates!
