Freshman English - Semester 2

As we wrap up Term 2, we are moving ahead into the second part of freshman English during which we will shift our focus from examining the writer's craft and writing for a variety of reasons to analyzing literature and the key components an author uses to develop their characters, setting, and theme.

This semester we will be reading To Kill a Mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet, as well as other selections of short stories, novels, and poems.  Students will be learning how to identify key literary devices and understand how and why author's choose to use these devices to create their stories.  While the focus shifts to the analysis of literature, students will still be doing a variety of writing, with a significant emphasis on argumentative writing to analyze literature.

This will be a challenging semester, and I encourage anyone who feels lost or who needs extra help to stay after along the way, so that you can build a strong foundation for the skills you will be using in English throughout the rest of high school.
